Crosstown Mechanical, Inc. also provides installations of a mechanically simple and highly efficient means of harvesting renewable energy from the earth for space heating and cooling and water heating called “Direct Exchange Geothermal Heating and Cooling”. To achieve this a earth loop made from copper tubing is buried below the earths surface where the temperature remains a constant temperature. Refrigerant is circulated through this loop which is in direct contact with the earth. Heat is absorbed or given up to the earth depending on the season and transferred to either your home or buildings heating and cooling system or to a heat exchanger to heat water used for either domestic hot water or for radiant in floor heat.

This technology is 300 to 400 percent efficient meaning for every unit of energy used to operate the compressor “or pump” you gain 3 to 4 times the heat out due to the transfer process called “refrigeration effect.” Direct Exchange is even 20 to 25 percent more efficient over conventional geothermal systems which use many feet of poly pipe an additional pump and a water to refrigerant heat exchanger. Direct Exchange technology takes the fluid transfer pump, the need for a large outdoor water loop, and the inefficient transfer method out of the equation. There are installations and case studies much farther north than Minnesota in Canada with much success. Many report of saving 70 percent on energy consumption for heating and air conditioning.
Direct Exchange technology will be the standard in the future. With rising fuel costs and environmental impacts of burning fossil fuels this just makes sense period!
